What is the biggest thing you’ve learned as a Graduate SGA president so far?
I’ve learned that serving as Graduate Student Association President requires true advocacy, collaboration, and adaptability. Leading a diverse graduate student body means balancing various needs while ensuring their voices are heard at the institutional level. I’ve gained a deeper appreciation for shared governance and the impact student leadership can have on policies and student success. Additionally, I’ve learned the importance of building relationships with stakeholders, fostering community, and making strategic decisions that enhance the graduate student experience. This role has reinforced my commitment to servant leadership and the power of collective action in driving meaningful change.
What made you decide to attend Southern University and A&M College for undergrad?
After receiving my Executive Master of Public Administration, I decided to further my education and was accepted into the Ph.D. program in Public Policy at Southern University. This decision was driven by my passion for advancing equitable policies, fostering institutional excellence, and enhancing leadership in higher education. Sothern’s commitment to scholarship, service, and community impact made it the ideal place to continue my academic and professional growth.

How has Southern University and A&M College molded you into the person you are today?
Southern University has played a pivotal role in shaping the person I am today. It has provided me with transformative leadership experiences, a commitment to service, and a deeper understanding of advocacy and public policy. The university’s rich history, strong sense of community, and dedication to academic excellence have reinforced my passion for higher education, student success, and institutional advancement. Through mentorship, opportunities for engagement, and a culture of resilience, Southern has strengthened my ability to lead with purpose, vision, and integrity.
What specific initiatives have you headed up this year (or are planning), and how do you think they will improve the school and surrounding community?
This year, I have spearheaded several key initiatives aimed at enhancing the graduate student experience and strengthening the relationship between Southern University’s graduate and undergraduate communities.
Providing Scholarships for Graduate Students – I have worked to secure funding opportunities that directly support graduate students, ensuring they have access to the financial resources necessary to succeed.
Planning a Scholarship Ball – To further this mission, I am organizing a Scholarship Ball aimed at raising funds for graduate students, fostering a culture of philanthropy, and increasing scholarship availability.
Fostering Relationships with the Undergraduate Community – I have prioritized strengthening connections between undergraduate students and the graduate school to encourage Southern University as their first choice for continuing education. This initiative ensures a seamless transition for students who wish to pursue advanced degrees.
Leading a Rebranding Initiative for the Graduate Student Association and Graduate School – With the support of my advisor and dean, I have spearheaded a strategic rebranding effort to enhance visibility, engagement, and the overall identity of the Graduate Student Association and Graduate School. This initiative aims to modernize the student experience and strengthen our impact on campus.
Each of these initiatives contributes to the university’s growth, student success, and the surrounding community by fostering opportunities, financial support, and a more connected academic environment.

How is your SGA administration/school currently working on attending to the mental health of students?
Our GSA administration is actively working to address the mental health needs of students through a variety of initiatives. We have held events focused on mental health awareness, stress management, and self-care, while also planning additional programming to provide continued support for students.
Additionally, we are collaborating with the Undergraduate Student Government Association and university administration to host Wellness Day Events aimed at promoting mental well-being across campus. These events provide students with resources, activities, and access to mental health professionals to encourage a culture of wellness within our academic community.
By prioritizing mental health initiatives, we aim to create a supportive environment where students feel heard, valued, and equipped to navigate the challenges of graduate education.

What does leadership mean to you?
Leadership, to me, is the ability to inspire, empower, and uplift others while fostering a culture of excellence, service, and integrity. It is about being a visionary who not only sets the course but also works collaboratively to achieve meaningful progress. True leadership requires adaptability, accountability, and the courage to make difficult decisions while remaining committed to the greater good.
As a leader, I believe in servant leadership; leading with humility, purpose, and a heart for others. It is about creating opportunities, advocating for those in need, and leaving a lasting impact that benefits both the present and future generations
