Virginia State University (VSU) has been selected by the Commission on Presidential Debates to host a General Election U.S. Presidential Debate on October 1, 2024. This landmark decision marks the first instance of a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) serving as the venue for such a prominent political event.
VSU President, Dr. Makola M. Abdullah, expressed the institution’s gratitude, stating, “This is a historic moment for our university and for HBCUs nationwide. Our university mantra is ‘Greater Happens Here,’ and we look forward to welcoming the candidates, the Commission on Presidential Debates, and the entire nation to the GREATER at VSU.”
The selection of VSU reflects the Commission’s acknowledgment of the university’s commitment to shaping future leaders and fostering political discourse. The debate will provide a platform for candidates to present policies, engage in constructive dialogue, and showcase leadership abilities.
Recognizing the substantial preparation involved in hosting a national event, VSU is eager to contribute to meaningful conversations on issues impacting the nation. The university aims to uphold its reputation for advancing social justice and shaping future leaders. Eldon Burton, VSU Assistant Vice President for Government Relations, remarked, “This achievement will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on the campus community, the university’s reputation, and the nation as a whole.”
The debate is scheduled to take place at the VSU Multipurpose Center, known for its state-of-the-art facilities and advanced audiovisual capabilities.
As the debate date approaches, VSU, in collaboration with the Commission on Presidential Debates, will provide updates.
