Alpha Phi Alpha Releases Statement Supporting Rep. Al Green’s Protest at Presidential Address

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. issued a statement this morning applauding their fraternity brother Congressman Al Green for his bold stance against President Donald J. Trump’s recent policies during the President’s address to a joint session of Congress. In the statement, the Fraternity praised Green’s courage and conviction in speaking out, despite facing ejection from the chamber.

Rep. Green, a 1968 Beta Nu Chapter initiate at Florida A&M University and a long-time Texas representative, stood up and declared that the President had “no mandate” to cut Medicaid before being removed by Speaker Mike Johnson. The Fraternity emphasized that Green’s actions align with Alpha Phi Alpha’s long history of civil rights activism, a legacy carried by esteemed members such as Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Paul Robeson, Rep. Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., and Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall.

In its statement, Alpha Phi Alpha also condemned recent actions by the Trump administration, including executive orders targeting Birthright Citizenship, the elimination of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs, and the proposed dissolution of the Department of Education. The Fraternity also expressed its disapproval of the recent firing of Four-Star General Brother Charles Q. Brown, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Alpha Phi Alpha General President Brother Lucien J. Metellus, Jr. recently issued a ‘Call to Action’ urging fraternity members and chapters to actively engage in countering attacks on DEI and advocating for the protection of the Department of Education. The Fraternity reaffirmed its commitment to mobilizing its members to meet with congressional representatives and senators to push back against these policies.

Alpha Phi Alpha stated that it remains dedicated to the advancement and protection of African Americans and people of color. With a long-standing tradition of standing at the forefront of civil rights and social justice, the Fraternity made it clear that it will not remain silent as efforts to roll back historic advancements continue.
