Kappa Alpha Psi Marks Founders Day with Service to Unhoused People in Memphis
On their Founders Day, members of Kappa Alpha Psi gathered not to celebrate themselves but to give back. In a city known for its resilience, the fraternity, which was established in 1911, demonstrated its commitment to community service by aiding Memphis’s unhoused population.
The local alumni chapter, the Memphis Alumni Chapter, prepared and distributed meals for 200 people at the Hospitality Hub, a resource center for the city’s unhoused. At the fraternity’s local headquarters on Eastmoreland Avenue, fraternity brothers cooked fried and smoked turkey, green beans, and homemade dressing.
“This is what our founders stood for — service to our community,” Randy Page told ABC24 Memphis as he oversaw the preparation of the food. “When we see those smiling faces, it’s a reminder that we’re living up to their legacy.”
But the fraternity’s efforts didn’t stop at meals. As temperatures dropped in Memphis, the group handed out blankets, socks, gloves, and other warm clothing to help people endure the cold.
Page issued a challenge to others in the city. “I want all the Divine Nine and every Memphis resident to look out for our fellow man. It’s all about service,” he said, referencing the nine historically Black Greek-letter organizations that form the National Pan-Hellenic Council.
Kappa Alpha Psi’s Founders Day was a reminder, as Page put it, “to be the difference you want to see in this city.”
