New Haven Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Strengthens Local Black Philanthropy with $10,000 Donation to The Prosperity Foundation

The Delta Iota Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., has made a significant contribution to community empowerment by donating $10,000 to The Prosperity Foundation. The donation, facilitated through the chapter’s Sigma Outreach Educational Development Initiative, Inc. (SOEDII), was announced on Monday, December 16th.

Founded in 2010 by Delta Iota Sigma Brother Howard K. Hill, The Prosperity Foundation grew out of the Urban Prosperity Fund, a component of The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven. The fund was created to promote philanthropy, prosperity, and self-empowerment within the Black community while challenging entrenched mindsets and fostering sustainable change.

Hill, who owns Howard K. Hill Funeral Services, established the foundation after witnessing the economic struggles many Black families face, particularly when dealing with funeral expenses and financial crises. The Prosperity Foundation encourages collective participation in philanthropy, financial planning, and the support of Black-owned businesses and initiatives.

The $10,000 donation from Delta Iota Sigma establishes a donor-advised fund within The Prosperity Foundation, ensuring that resources are managed by a Black-owned and operated entity. The initiative underscores the chapter’s dedication to community empowerment and economic development in Greater New Haven, a core tenet of the fraternity’s mission.

This contribution signals a broader commitment to creating a future where the Black community can thrive, guided by financial literacy, self-determination, and collective action.
