Did you know Elizabeth Duncan Koontz was a member of Zeta Phi Beta? Koontz was a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

As the first African-American president of the National Education Association and director of the United States Department of Labor Women’s Bureau, Elizabeth Duncan Koontz was a national figure in education, civil rights, and the women’s movement. In 1981, Koontz began working as a fourth-grade teacher at Harnett County Training School in Dunn, North Carolina, where she taught special-needs children.

Koontz built her legacy on equality of gender and race. An award honoring Elizabeth Duncan Koontz’s altruism is given by the Salisbury Human Relations Council every year.
