African American Color Field Painter Sam Gilliam Is A Member Of Kappa Alpha Psi
Did you know that Sam Gilliam is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi? Gilliam pledged the Alpha Omicron Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
Sam Gilliam is an African-American artist who paints in the abstract expressionist and lyrical abstraction style. He is associated with a group of artists from Washington, D.C., known as the Washington Color School, that developed a form of abstract art from color field painting in the 1950s and 1960s.
He works on stretched, draped, and wrapped canvas to create 3D elements. He is known as the first artist in 1965 to introduce the idea of a painted canvas without stretcher bars that hangs from the wall. This was a major contribution to the Color Field School.
