Did you know that William Tolbert Jr., the past President of Liberia was a member of Phi Beta Sigma? William Tolbert pledged the Beta Upsilon Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.
William Tolbert was the 20th President of Liberia. He was born in Bensonville, Liberia, and was trained as a civil servant. He began his political career when he joined the House of Representatives in 1943 for the True Whig Party. He became President after serving as Vice president of Liberia under Wiliam Tubman. When Tubman passed away in 1971, Tolbert became President of Liberia.
Tolbert served as President for nine years. In 1980, he was killed in the Liberian coup d’état. The coup was staged by a native Liberian faction of the Armed Forces of Liberia
