This Delta Sigma Theta Soror Has Created a Conference To Help Black Women Succeed In Tech Entrepreneurship
Delta Sigma Theta soror Regina Gwynn is helping Black women tech founders succeed in a major way.
Along with her cofounder, Esosa Ighodaro-Johnson, Gwynn has created Black Women Talk Tech, a worldwide collective of Black women tech founders who have a unique understanding of the challenges Black women startup owners in the industry face. Their goal, to identify, support, and encourage Black women to build the next billion-dollar business.
“Since tech companies started releasing their diversity reports within the last decade, there has been little movement in meaningful change,” Black Women Talk Tech told Watch The Yard in an email. “Black employees only make up less than 3% in the top 75 Silicon Valley tech companies and Black women account for 1% of that segment. The diversity programs at large corporations have either been reduced or completely eliminated, which is why building tables for black technologists is a necessity.:
To combat these disparities, Black Women Talk Tech is hosting their 5th annual Roadmap To Billions Conference on August 12th and 13th.
According to their organization, the conference was built for Black women entrepreneurs, by Black women entrepreneurs and this year’s conference includes workshops on artificial intelligence and machine learning, Bitcoin & blockchain, growth hacking and the latest trends in technology.
To top it off the conference will bring together Executive keynote speakers, recruiting opportunities, investor office hours and special guests round out exclusive activities for attendees.
This year’s event is slated to bring together big names in tech, business & culture, featuring powerful conversations with an impressive list of Black fraternity and sorority members including Mellody Hobson, Chairwoman of Starbucks (Alpha Kappa Alpha), Kobi Wu Pasmore, Founder, VisuWall (Delta Sigma Theta), Nichole Jordan, SVP Global Partner Success, Via (Alpha Kappa Alpha), Netta Dobbins, Founder, MimConnect (Delta Sigma Theta), Tanya Van Court, Founder, Goalsetter (Delta Sigma Theta), and Abiodun Johnson, Founder, GeoGloud (Omega Psi Phi).
“There is almost a sisterhood when attendees connect during our conferences, that reminds me of my amazing sorority that is Delta Sigma Theta. We are driving economic impact through public service and scholarship with this transformative tech experience,” Gwynn stated.
As a way to engage and help young Black women who want to get into tech, Black Women Talk Tech has invited actively enrolled college students to register for free tickets to this year’s virtual event. “We know that HBCUs have the power to educate and prepare our future entrepreneurs. We are excited to bring these students into this technology ecosystem,” said Esosa Ighodaro, Co-Founder.
This year’s conference will also include a special focus on beauty businesses with The Pitch, a $50,000 competition powered by Estée Lauder Companies Inc. in which entrepreneurs will compete for cash, prizes and private conversations with ELC executives.
