These Two Zeta Phi Beta Sorors are Creating a $100,000 PAC to Support Women of Color in Upcoming Elections
Two sorors of Zeta Phi Beta have teamed up to raise $100,000 for women of color for upcoming elections.
Zeta sorors Nicole Butler and Mae Whiteside started FlourishPAC in October 2018. The PAC was created to mobilize women of color to run for office and to help them advocate for issues that affect them and their families.
Within the PAC, the sorors are committed to engaging local and state candidates by implementing custom programming that ensures their platforms are noticed and respected. This political action committee was initially started with the premise that other women of Zeta will take on the task of running for and winning elected office.
“Of the 107 women serving in the 115th US Congress, 38, or 35.5%, are women of color, 4 in the Senate and 34 in the House. Of the 73 women serving in statewide elective executive offices, 8, or 11.0%, are women of color. Of the 1,874 women state legislators serving nationwide, 456 or 24.3% are women of color,” FlourishPAC’s website states.
Recently, FlourishPAC endorsed Aimy Steele, for North Carolina House of Representatives District 82. In December 2018, FlourishPAC co-chaired a holiday luncheon in support of Cook County State’s Attorney & Delta Soror Kimberly Foxx with special guest John Legend, an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Winner.
Mae Whiteside launched the PAC’s star-studded fanfare in December 2018. The event provided women of color candidates for Chicago City Council a platform to introduce their vision for the communities they represent. The event was well attended by WNBA players, members of the business community, community activists and political consultants. FlourishPAC plans to host its inaugural ball, aptly titled “Flourish Fling,” in Greenbelt, MD at Martin’s Crosswinds on Friday March 29, 2019.
