Leadership Highlight: Junior Vice Polemarch of Kappa Alpha Psi’s Middle Western Province, Selwyn Q. Bachus II

This summer, the brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi held a conference for their Junior Vice Polemarchs (JVPs), the undergraduate brothers who have been chosen by the fraternity to represent regional leadership of the fraternity.

In an effort to highlight these young brothers, we at Watch The Yard reached out to the fraternity and were put in contact with them for interviews. Among these JVPs was Selwyn Q Bachus II, a 22-year-old Fall 2015 initiate of the fraternity’s Iota Tau chapter at the University of Arkansas who is the Junior Vice Polemarch of the Middle Western Province which is made up of Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraksa, Oklahoma and North-West Arkansas.

We talked to the Architecture major about his position and goals.

What does it mean to be a Junior Vice Province Polemarch to you?

It is an opportunity to help lead the undergrad chapters in the province forward, and be a voice for what we believe is best for the province and grand chapter! It’s an honor.

What are the specific initiatives you are working on this year in your province?

This year we will be focusing specifically on mental health awareness and financial literacy.

As college students we need all the help we can get learning how to grow and manage our finances, and mental health is something that often gets overlooked in our community that we should take much more seriously.

What are you doing this year to specifically support the undergraduate chapters that you represent?

This year, I will be going to visit as many chapters as I can to help with their events throughout the school year.

What made you want to pledge Kappa Alpha Psi?

My father, uncle, and cousin are all Nupes. They have been examples of what it means to achieve in every field, and I wanted to follow suit starting with becoming a member of Kappa Alpha Psi.

What is it about your province that makes it so unique in Kappa?

The Middle Western Province is unique to me because even when brothers move to states outside of our province, they remain extremely active and financial in the province, showing up to all of our conferences and retreats.

In what ways have you experienced mentorship from alumni brothers as a JVP?

As a JVP brothers have taken me under their wing and shown me the leadership skills that I possess, some that I wasn’t even aware of.

We now live in a digital world, what do you think undergraduate chapters across all orgs need to do to represent themselves online in 2018?

Every chapter should capitalize on social media as a platform to learn what the campus community wants to see in terms of educational events and social functions.

Why do you think Watch The Yard is important to Black greekdom?

Watch The Yard is important to Black Greekdom because in a society trying to expose and highlight only the negative aspects of our organizations, Watch The Yard is always showing the positive.

What does brotherhood mean to you?

Brotherhood is always having someone to call on. Something I can always rely on from my chapter, province, and nationally.

What do you plan on doing after graduation?

After graduation, I will be teaching a year of high school at my Alma Mater, Creighton Prep. Then, I will be pursuing my Masters degree in architecture, hopefully at Columbia University in New York.
